What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a vision condition that is commonly associated with aging. In fact, by age 80 more than half of adults have or have had a cataract. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. When the lens becomes compromised, it is difficult for light to be focused properly on the retina, leading to blurry or distorted vision. This condition can occur in one or both eyes. Some of the more common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurry Vision
  • Fading of bright colors
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Increased glares or halos
  • Double vision in one eye

In addition to being caused by aging, cataracts can also be brought on by trauma to the eye, and other vision conditions such as glaucoma. While changes to prescriptions glasses may alleviate symptoms of the early stages of a cataract, surgery becomes necessary once the cataract becomes larger and affects daily activities such as reading and driving. During the procedure, your experienced cataract surgeon will remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens, also known as an IOL.

Discover Clear Vision

If you believe you may be suffering from cataracts, it is important to seek treatment. Contact the experienced cataract surgeons of International EyeCare today to schedule a comprehensive consultation. We will perform a full evaluation and make recommendations for the best treatment options.

During cataract surgery our team of our talented eye surgeons will remove the natural lens that has become clouded, and replace it with an artificial lens, known as an IOL, or intraocular lens. This lens can be left in the eye permanently for sustained vision. During your consultation at our LASIK facility, our Laser vision surgeons will thoroughly evaluate the eye and determine which treatment method is best for you. We will also discuss your different options for intraocular lenses, including monofocal and accommodating IOLs.

Types of Cataract Surgery

The type of cataract surgery that you receive will depend on the progression of the cataract. Most commonly, a process known as phacoemulsification is performed in order to rid the eye of the cataract. During this process, ultrasonic vibrations are used to dissolve the proteins that have clouded the lens. Once dissolved, these pieces are suctioned out through a small probe. Then, your surgeon will carefully place the new lens in the eye.

All cataract surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients will return home following treatment. Our physicians and attentive staff will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to facilitate a fast, comfortable healing process.

The physicians at International EyeCare are experienced in dealing with previous laser vision correction. We work with our patients to help them understand all treatment options, and address any questions or concerns. If you have been diagnosed with a cataract and would like to learn more about your treatment options, we encourage you to contact our Houston, Texas practice today. We also treat patients seeking crosslinking help for keratoconus.
